The AFC U-17 Asian Cup Qualifiers in Shepparton mean more than most for Australia’s Peter Antoniou.
Taking to the field for the Joeys, the mullet clad right back has a deep family connection to the city.
Antoniou’s mother grew up in Shepparton, with his nonno (grandfather) once a farmer in the region.
Add to this all of his cousins that live here and there is a pretty sizeable contingent of supporters.
“It (playing in Shepparton) is an amazing feeling,” the Melbourne City defender said.
“Heaps of them (family) came down tonight (Friday) and Wednesday night and a few more will come on Sunday so it’s just great to be able to play in front of them and to score two goals on Wednesday, it’s amazing.”
The youngster said his family was overjoyed when it was revealed he would be playing in Shepparton, with cousin – Adelaide AFL player Josh Rachele – even gifting Antoniou his boots.
“Heaps of messages came flowing through so everyone was just stoked they could come and watch and being in Australia it’s a great opportunity for us,” he said.
“I played with his (Rachele’s) boots tonight and Wednesday.”
A rising star of the Australian game, Antoniou will be hoping his development can continue in the coming years.
